The Illinois departure tax and $1.50 ‘per’ package delivery tax may be back, sooner than later.
Two Illinois Democrats say they ‘will’ pass a $771 million dollar tax and fee package in October to bail out Brandon Johnson’s Chicago mass transit system.
The Democrats appeared Thursday afternoon webcast sponsored by the Lincoln Forum and the Union League Club of Chicago.
Democrats Rep. Buckner (upper right) and Sen. Ram Villivalam (lower left) said that there ‘will’ be a vote, and a positive ‘yes’ vote, later this fall.
Democrat JB Pritzker, would most likely sign the legislation to shore up his support in Democrat controlled Chicago
The legislation may involve the Illinois exit/departure tax and the $1.50 per package delivery tax (AKA: “The Amazon Tax”). The Exit tax is a tax you would have to play to sell your house in Illinois. The Package tax is a new tax that would add $1.50 on every delivery to your home. (Doordash, Groceries, Amazon, UPS, Walmart, etc….). The entire state of Illinois would pay these taxes to fund the City of Chicago.
History: These two tax proposals passed the Democrat controlled Illinois senate in the spring, but the bill did not make it until the Illinois house until 11:47pm on the last day of the legislative session, and thus did not get a vote in the Illinois house before midnight. Legislators plan to bring back discussion of new taxes in Illinois’ October Veto session in Springfield
