WASHINGTON (CBS DC) — One Republican lawmaker is calling for a constitutional amendment to limit the amount of terms members of Congress can serve.

Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina revealed in a press release Wednesday that he has filed a bill which calls for a maximum of 12 years in either chamber body.

“I filed a bill that calls for amending the Constitution to provide for term limits for Members of Congress. It calls for a maximum of 12 years in either body,” Mulvaney said in a statement.

Mulvaney’s bill would allow lawmakers to serve in the House for 12 years and then if they run for the Senate and win, serve another maximum of 12 years.

“Believe me, 24 years is more than enough time to serve in Washington,” Mulvaney said, adding that he supported shorter terms but compromised at “12+12” to gain support.
